Today George was waiting forever for James to get out of the locker room at swimming. He called in, "James, you coming?" James responded, "Yeah! Just one more article."

Hal (Henry) is very nervous about pajama day at school tomorrow. "Mom, it just doesn't seem right to wear your pajamas to school."

entrepeneurship

James is planning on having a hot chocolate stand this winter, figuring it will have less competition than an summer lemonade stand. Hal is going to open a restaurant with Elizabeth which will sell apples with cream cheese and cinnamon. This delicacy figures into Hal's life a lot. He claims that the anger monster hates it and runs away when he eats it. For a long time, James was going to have a grilled cheese restaurant with "grilled cheeses from around the world." Evidently, the man who designed the flip camera beat him to it.

Hal is considering being called "Henry" in kindergarten. He says "I'm almost touching Henry but I'm not sure yet so I'll know by the first day of school if I'm touching Henry or not."

Hal's almost riding a two wheeler.

summer 2011

We were infested with ants this spring. George was at the counter when he saw Hal pick up something. A few moments later, Hal said with a slight grimmace "Hmm...I guess in most cultures they cook insects." A few months later, we were eating squash blossoms at dinner. Hal bit into his and announced, "There's like 10 ants in this one!" We all turned toward him as he shrugged his shoulders and popped the rest in.

James lost his second top tooth after months and months of it being loose. He was purposefully trying to see how long he could keep it in. I finally knocked it out accidentally when I was cleaning his face. By the end, it was gray, pointing straight out and had an adult tooth fully 2 millimeters long behind it.

Hazel's first phrase: "ee too!" She seems to love to recite numbers, especially four. "'mon bwudders" and "go way" are other favorite phrases right now. "UM!!" (gum) is her favorite request (although today she ate chili lime chicarones with gusto).

March 2011

Hal found frozen minnow at Odd Fellows, "Let's take it home so we can science it, Mom."

James sorting through Cuisinaire rods chooses the 2,3,5 and 7 "These are essential to mathematics -- you don't need the others because you can make them with these."

James: Sometimes I think about numbers as squares -- like 4 because it is a square of two and two. And nine is a square of three and three. You can't do that with all numbers because there aren't enough or there's extras"

I asked him if someone had been talking to him about square numbers and he was surprised and excited to find out that other people had the same idea.

James heard upstairs getting ready for bed: Hal, what kind of weird ceremony do you have me involved in this time? (pause) Do you even know what sacrifice means?

January 2011

Hal: I just love, Hazel. I just love her. I love her smell.

Later, after amusing Hazel in her crib while we got ready he said:
We played peek-a-boo, hide and seek, I read a book, and I smelled her.
